Stable partnership (Catalonia)
Pareja estable (Cataluña)
What it is
In Catalonia, a stable partnership is two people living together in a community of life analogous to marriage who have lived together for more than 2 uninterrupted years, have had a child together during the cohabitation, or formalise the relationship in a public deed. It cannot be formed by unemancipated minors, relatives in the direct line or in the collateral line up to the second degree, married people not separated in fact, or someone living as a couple with a third person; divorced people or those separated from a previous marriage can. There is a Register of Stable Partnerships of Catalonia. If the partnership is formed by public deed, registration is optional and is requested from the notary, who sends the data to the Register. Applications can be filed in person (a single application signed by both, who must attend; by appointment in Barcelona, Girona and Tortosa) or online (one application from each partner, with an electronic signature). The decision is notified within two months at most; if it is not, the application is deemed granted.
